Safety & Risk Management
Be the lookout who keeps our crew confident on the water
Help build a safe, welcoming paddling environment where every crew can focus on the stroke, knowing there is a solid safety plan behind them.
Your stroke in the boat
- Maintain the club’s safety policies and emergency action plans.
- Work with team safety representatives to support practical safety plans.
- Oversee incident reporting and maintain related documentation.
- Lead Safe Sport education initiatives and track certifications.
- Conduct risk assessments and help ensure safety compliance at practices and LDBCI-hosted events.
- Be a point of contact for questions about emergency access to the club.
- Maintain a confidential process for members to flag in advance if they may need additional support during an emergency.
- Bring safety-related resource and budget needs to the Board for approval, including radios, AEDs, first-aid supplies and cold-water PFD requirements.
Bring your dragon energy
- Spot the changing conditions: anticipate risks and speak up early.
- Keep a steady drumbeat: communicate calmly, clearly and consistently.
- Look out for every paddler: be approachable, inclusive and discreet.
- Lead through others: support safety representatives and follow through on actions.
Paddle together
Partner with team safety representatives, coaches and event leads; coordinate with Equipment & Asset Management on inspections and safety gear needs, and with the Treasurer on budget proposals.
Shared commitment
You guide this portfolio, but you do not paddle alone. Bring members, team representatives, committees and working groups alongside you to get things done. All Board directors share responsibility for upholding Safe Sport principles and supporting compliance with Dragon Boat Canada standards.
